This time I would like to tell you about one of the best days off that I have had here. One weekend my Spanish friend Sergio, who lives in Granada and works in Mallorca, decided to visit me and for my day off we planned an amazing trip together by car.
First stop – Cala Galdana
Our trip started at 9:00 in the morning. We were full of energy and excitement. The first place we went to was Cala Galdana. I had already been there with my Cuban friends but we stopped by because I wanted to show it to Sergio and to my colleague Krisztina. We were walking around, enjoying the sea view, cooling down our feet in the sea.
Es Mercadal and Mahón
Our next stop was quite short. We went to visit Es Mercadal because there was “fiesta” (celebration/festival) and we wanted to show horses to Sergio. We also bought “pomada” (Menorquin gin with lemonade), typical drink of fiestas. After that our journey continued to Mahón where we had a nice menorquin lunch in one of the restaurants in the port. Because of the time, after the lunch we decided to skip visiting the city and we went to La Mola.
La Mola
La Mola was actually the best part of all day. It’s a peninsula that lies on the north of the harbour of Mahón. There is the fortress of Isabel II there, built between 1848 and 1875. It’s quite huge complex and it’s worth taking enough time for visiting. We spent there almost two hours and half. We were following the map, walking through the tunnels, enjoying amazing views from different parts of the fortress, taking photos just to remember this wonderful place. The last part of the route we were just walking silently, listening to the blowing wind and sea, we were tired but actually we didn’t need words anymore. We were full of impressions that we were trying to absorb.
Sunset in Cova d’en Xoroi
Nevertheless, La Mola wasn’t the last place we visited that day. At the end we went to see the sunset from the famous
Cova d’en Xoroi. It’s a natural cave placed in Cala en Porter. The inside of the cave has many spaces connected by corridors. The cave can be visited during the day and night. Most of the people go there to see the sunset or they come for the party at night. It’s beautiful place worth visiting. It’s quite busy though so I recommend buying the tickets in advance if you don’t want to wait in the long queue like we did. The entrace for the sunset is 13 € with a drink included, if you want to drink more, be prepared for higher prices, for example one cocktail costs 12 €.
The way back
When we fully enjoyed the time in the cave, we decided to go back, it was quite late anyway and my colleague Krisztina and I had to wake up for work the following day. On the way back we also realized that after the lunch we actually didn’t eat anything and we were quite hungry. At 23:45 we arrived to Ciutadella and went to buy kebab in order to get our stomach satisfied. After the whole day we were super tired and the only place we wanted to be after that was our bed. We went to sleep late but we were happy.
There is a quote from Shanti: “At the end of the day your feet should be dirty, your hair messy and your eyes sparkling.” and I think that’s how we felt at the end. It was an amazing day.
